Managing Databases

To create a new INCA database:

  1. In the Database menu, select New.

    The New database dialog box opens.

  2. Specify a name for the new database.
  3. Click OK.

    The new database is created with the default path for INCA databases and opened.

Note

If you work with two or more databases, you can keep the data volume low and make optimal use of the full INCA performance.

To open an INCA database:

  1. In the Database menu, select Open.

    The Open database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the database you want to open.

    If the database you want to open is not listed, do the following:

    1. Select <select path>.

      The Select database path dialog box opens.

    2. Select the directory containing the database.
  3. Click OK.

    The database opens.

Information on supported database types

INCA supports the following database type:

INCA 7 x64 database

Databases of this type are not limited to any maximum capacity and contain 64 bit objects. This format was introduced with INCA V7.3 (x64).

To save the INCA database:

To save the database under a new name and/or a different database type:

To delete an INCA database:

  1. In the Database menu, select Delete database.

    The Delete database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the database you want to delete.

    The Delete database dialog box opens.

    If the database you want to delete is not listed, do the following:

    1. Select <select path>.

      The Select database path dialog box opens.

    2. Select the directory containing the database.
  3. Click OK.

    The database is deleted.

To define information for the database:

  1. In the Database menu, select Database management.

    The Database info for: database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Database info tab.
  3. Enter a name and a comment for the database.
  4. Click OK.

    The details are accepted for the database.

To optimize a database:

The Optimize function executes a defragmentation, i.e. rewrites fragmented parts of the database to increase the speed of access and retrieval.

  1. In the Database menu, select Database management.

    The Database info for: database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Analyze tab.
  3. Select the Optimize check box.
  4. Click OK.

    The database is defragmented.

You can further optimize the database by selecting Convert.

To save the database in a completely rewritten form:

The Convert function rewrites the complete database to increase the speed of access and retrieval.

  1. In the Database menu, select Database management.

    The Database info for: database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Analyze tab.
  3. Select the Convert check box.
  4. Click OK.

    The database is completely rewritten.

You can further optimize the database by selecting Optimize.

To repair a database:

The Repair function checks whether the internal objects and the logical structure of the database can be read. If any inconsistencies are detected, these will be repaired. Afterwards, the database will be optimized and converted.

  1. In the Database menu, select Database management.

    The Database info for: database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Analyze tab.
  3. Select the Repair check box.
  4. Click OK.

    The database is repaired, optimized, and converted.

To check the database:

The Check function checks whether the internal objects and the logical structure of the database can be read. Detected inconsistencies will be listed in the monitor window.

  1. In the Database menu, select Database management.

    The Database info for: database dialog box opens.

  2. Select the Analyze tab.
  3. Select the Check check box.
  4. Click OK.

    The internal database structure is checked. A message box displays the result of the check.

  5. Click OK.

Note

If any inconsistencies are listed, you should execute the Repair function.
