Copying/Moving Folders or Items

You can copy or move database/workspace items or entire folders and their contents. When the target folder contains an object with the same name as the original, the extension _1 is added to the name of the copied object.

Copy Rules

• The following copy actions are possible:

  • copy one or more items from one or more folders into a common target folder
  • duplicate a top-level folder via copy/paste
  • copy one lower-level folder into a target folder

• The following copy actions are not possible:

  • copy a lower-level folder and one or more items at the same time
  • copy a top-level folder into a lower-level folder
  • copy several lower-level folders at the same time
  • copy a lower-level folder and paste it as top-level folder

Move Rules

• The following move actions are possible:

  • move one or more items from one or more folders to a common target folder
  • move one or more lower-level folders to a common target folder
  • move one or more lower-level folders and one or more items to a common target folder

• The following move actions are not possible:

  • move a top-level folder into a lower level folder
  • cut a lower-level folder and paste it as top-level folder

1. In the "Database" or "Workspace" list, select the folder(s) or item(s) you want to copy/move.

2. Do one of the following to copy the :folder/item.

   • In the Edit menu, select Copy.
   • Click the Copy button.
   • Press <Ctrl> + <c>.

   The folder or item is copied to the clipboard.

3. Do one of the following to move the :folder/item.

   • In the Edit menu, select Cut.
   • Click the Cut button.
   • Press <Ctrl> + <x>.

   The folder or item is moved to the clipboard. The item symbol in the Component Manager appears now black and white (e.g., ).

   Note
   When you close the database/workspace while the item or folder is still in the clipboard, the clipboard is emptied, but the object is not deleted.

4. In the Component Manager, select the target folder for the folder or item in the clipboard.

5. Do one of the following to paste the folder/item(s) without updating references.

   • In the Edit menu, select Paste.
   • Click the Paste button
   • Press <Ctrl> + <v>.

   The folder or items are inserted in the selected target folder. If the items were cut, the corresponding items in the source folder are deleted. References in copied items refer to the original items in the source locations.

6. Do one of the following to paste the folder/item(s) with updating references.

   • In the Edit menu, select Paste with references.
   • Right-click the target folder and select Paste with references from the context menu.
   • Press <Ctrl> + <B>.

   The folder or items are inserted in the selected target folder. The references between the copied items are updated so that they reference each other, instead of the original items. See also Example: Paste with References.
