Assigning an IP Address to a Chain

Before you can use a daisy chain with a measuring tool, e.g. a drive recorder, you need to configure it for that purpose. Since the measuring tool may reside in a different area of the network and use a different IP address range, it is necessary to set the IP address and in some cases also the subnet mask according to that network.

With this function you can modify the IP address of a chain in the configuration or assign it if it has not yet been set. This is the only way to set an IP address when you are working offline; if you have online access to physically connected hardware, however, it might be more convenient to do a search for hardware and read the IP address directly from the hardware.

In contrast to other measurement hardware, all devices in a daisy-chain have the same IP address, i.e. the IP address is assigned to the complete chain instead of single modules.

To assign an IP address to a chain:

  1. In the Topology list, select the chain whose IP address you would like to assign.
  2. In the Hardware menu, select Set Chain IP Address.

    A dialog opens.

  3. Enter the IP address and subnet mask for the daisy chain.

The default for the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. It defines where the hardware is searched for (e.g. in the local network).

  4. Click the Set IP Address button to assign the IP address to the selected daisy-chain in the Daisy Chain configuration program.

Note

If the IP address has not yet been assigned to the physically connected hardware, it is recommended that you initialize the hardware.
